Holiness is Not Luck; Holiness is a Choice, by St. Charbel (Feast, July 24)

Men demand miracles in order to believe, signs in order to see, messages in order to hear and understand, a path in order to walk and to reach salvation and happiness. The miracle is the Blessed Sacrament, the sign is the cross, the message is the Gospel, salvation is in the Church. The most important, the noblest, and the holiest sign is the cross, which is the sign of God’s love for you. Make it also the sign of your love for him. It is a sign of love and not of trouble; its light will shine upon the whole world. The salvation of humanity is accomplished by the Church, which for two thousand years has been carrying out the plan of which Christ is the beginning, and it will not be finished before the end of the world. All the waves of evil will break against the rock of the Church. Commit yourself fully to it, and do not pick and choose among its teachings. The most important and greatest message is the Gospel, which conveys Christ’s teaching; not a single letter of it will fall before the world perishes. Anyone who does not know the Gospel is an ignorant person who lives in darkness, even if he possesses all the knowledge in the world. Anyone who does not conform himself to the Gospel does not live. Do not falsify it to justify yourself. The reality of the Gospel is always the same. The most important miracle is the Blessed Sacrament, the Body of Christ, the Paschal Lamb who takes away the sins of the world, the living God who has risen from the dead.It is vain to look for signs more important than the sign of the cross. Do not demand messages that you suppose are more important than that of the Gospel. Do not seek your salvation far from Christ’s Church. Do not become distracted running after dazzling miracles greater than that of the Blessed Sacrament. Forsake deceptive magic that only sends you back into emptiness. Avoid any sign that does not point you to the sign of the cross. Ignore any message that does not come from the Gospel. Reject any miracle that does not bring you before the Blessed Sacrament. In the Church you discern all these signs. Through the cross, the Gospel, the Blessed Sacrament, and in the Church, you sanctify yourselves. God predestined you to holiness and not to death. Holiness is not luck; holiness is a choice.Do not expect it to be offered to you from outside; it is necessary to live it and to realize it inside. The kingdom of heaven is within you. Holiness is a grace and a decision: the grace is given to you by God, and it is up to you to make your decision. You are potentially saints; strive to be saints in reality.  “It is only by means of the Eucharist that we are able to live the heroic virtues of Christianity, such as charity to pardon one’s enemies, the love which enables us to suffer, the capacity to give one’s life for another; chastity at all times of life in all situations; patience in the face of suffering and the apparent silence of God in human history or our very own existence. Therefore always strive to be Eucharistic souls so as to be authentic Christians.” (St. Pope John Paul II)

“The Seraph of the Eucharist” “Paschal, a Franciscan brother, was tending sheep on a rocky Spanish mountainside when he heard the consecration bell ring out from the monastery chapel. As he genuflected in prayer, an angel suddenly stood before him holding a chalice and Sacred Host, offering the Blessed Sacrament for his adoration. In 1897, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed Saint Paschal Baylon the ‘seraph of the Eucharist.’” (Angels of the Lord: 365 Reflections on our Heavenly Guardians, Catherine Odell & Margaret Savitskas)

Sts. Joachim & Anne, Parents of the Bl. Virgin Mary, Patrons of parents & grandparents—Feast, July 26 Sts. Anne & Joachim, we bless you for your great faith and love as parents. Your respect and reverence for the sacredness of human life made you the parents of Mary, Mother of the Lord. Through your intercession, we ask God to grant young people today that same reverence for the gift of new life. May they accept, cherish, and nourish life from the very moment of conception. Grant to us as a nation a renewed reverence for every human life. As Mary cherished her Child from the womb even to the tomb, so may we see in every person the very image of God. St. Peter Julian Eymard, Priest, Apostle of the Eucharist, France (1811-1868)—Feast, Aug. 2“Mary’s contemplation before the Eucharist was of a nature that no words are adequate to describe. The whole world will witness the glorious transfiguration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It will have the exact opposite effect of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. At the transfiguration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, there will be an explosion of divine energy which will release the power of His love and renew the face of the earth. Then the world will see Real Power! All will be made well. All will belong to His Heart. All will be made one.” (Letters to a Brother Priest, available through us)

Here is for us the source of life. This heart is the heart of the Triune Divinity, and the center of all human hearts… It draws us to itself with secret power, it conceals us in itself in the Father’s bosom and floods us with the Holy Spirit. This heart, it beats for us in a small tabernacle where it remains mysteriously hidden in that still, white host.” (St. Teresa Benedicta)

St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr, Patron of Deacons, Cooks, and the Poor, Rome (d. 258)—Feast, Aug. 10Our God, who asks us to follow the example of Saint Lawrence, help us to imitate him in his virtues, to love Christ and His word, to love the Mass as our daily bread, and to love our brothers. St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, Priest, Martyr, Poland, (1894-1941)—Feast, Aug. 14“When the conquest for the Immaculate of the whole world and of every single soul now living or to live until the end of the world, and through Her for the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is completed, ... then souls will love the Sacred Heart as they have never as yet loved Him, because like Her they will have been immersed as never before in the mystery of love: the Cross, the Eucharist. Through Her the love of God will inflame the world, will set it on fire, and will effect the ‘assumption’ of souls,... the divinization of the entire world”(St. Maximilian Kolbe).

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven (1 Cor 2:9)—Solemnity, August 15“The Heart of Mary is the door WHICH LEADS US DIRECTLY TO JESUS. She is the gate through which we enter His Sacred Heart. Each ‘Hail Mary’ we pray opens our heart to His love and leads us INTO A DEEPER UNION WITH THE EUCHARISTIC HEART OF JESUS.” (Rosary Meditations from Mother Teresa, available through us)

St. Pius X, Pope of the Blessed Sacrament, Italy (1835-1914)—Feast, Aug. 21“The devotion to the Eucharist is the most noble, because it has God as its object; it is the most profitable for salvation, because it gives us the Author of Grace; it is the sweetest, because the Lord is Sweetness Itself.” “Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to Heaven. There are others: innocence, but that is for little children; penance, but we are afraid of it; generous endurance of trials of life, but when they come we weep and ask to be spared. The surest, easiest, shortest way is the Eucharist.” (St. Pius X)

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary—Feast, August 22:“Mary is raised to the height of glory, and crowned as Queen of Heaven and earth by the Most Holy Trinity because of her humility. We make a total consecration to Jesus through Mary, ‘Totus Tuus,’ totally yours. We surrender our hearts to You in the Holy Eucharist, Lord, where You give Your Heart to us. With each Hail Mary we pray—for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the Reign of the Most Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, in every heart!(From our A-13 pamphlet “The Eucharistic Rosary,” available through us)

St. Rose of Lima, First Saint and Patroness of the Americas (1586-1617)—Feast, Aug. 23St. Rose spent long hours with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in adoration. When her village was under attack, and the Holy Eucharist in danger of being desecrated, she bravely stood before the tabernacle.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, Rel. founder, Ptn of the Gutters & World Youth Day, Albania (1910-1997)—Sept. 5:If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration. Our hours ofadoration will be special hours of reparation for sins, and intercession for the needs of the whole world, exposing the sinsick and suffering humanity to the healing, sustaining and transforming rays of Jesus, radiating from the Eucharist. Eachone of us is a coworker of Christ – we must labor hard to carry Him to the hearts where He has not yet been known andloved…But, unless we have Jesus, we cannot give Him; that is why we need the Eucharist. Spend as much time aspossible in front of the Blessed Sacrament and He will fill you with His strength and His power.Perpetual adoration is the most beautiful thing you could ever think of doing. People are hungry for God. Imaginefor a moment that we are living in Jesus’ time and He has invited us to visit with Him and spend some quiet time gettingto know Him better. Being aware who He was, we would be humbled and honored by such an invitation. The good newsis that Jesus is here with us TODAY – body, blood, soul and divinity – in the Holy Eucharist. Although Jesus comes tous under the appearance of bread and wine, His presence is as real to us NOW as He was flesh-and-blood-real to Hisdisciples when he walked this earth. He can perform miracles, heal us, teach us, and love us. We can talk to Him and Hecan speak to us through His Word and through the Holy Spirit I who lives in us through our baptism and confirmation.Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life. Night and day, He is there. If you really want to grow inlove, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration.

The Most Holy Name of Mary: “Blessed be her most holy name!”—Feast, September 12:“St. Alphonsus Liguori, in his book of devotions, used to always join avisit to the Blessed Virgin Maryto each visit to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. And Saint Maximilian M. Kolbe used to recommend that when we go before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we never fail to remember Mary's presence, calling on her and associating ourselves with her, at least seeing to it that her sweet name comes to mind.” (Jesus, Our Eucharistic Love, Fr. Stefano Manelli)

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross—September 14In 1226, Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration was started in Avignon, France at the Church of the Holy Cross to refute the Albegensians heresies. In 1433, there was a massive flood which covered the town. The priests knew that the Blessed Sacrament was exposed, and went by boat to rescue our Lord. When they reached the Church it was under four feet of water, but from the entrance to the altar there was a dry path and the Holy Eucharist was safe! This is just one example of Our Eucharistic Lord’s triumph in the face of disaster.

St. Januarius, Bishop, Martyr, Italy (d. 305)—Feast, September 19Since the early days of the Church, Christians used cloths or flasks to collect the blood of the martyrs to preserve for devotion. The blood of St. Januarius, who was beheaded under Diocletian, was gathered and venerated over the centuries. In 1389, a phenomenon began to happenduring a procession with the blood of St. Januarius it began to bubble. Since then the coagulated blood has miraculously liquefied several times a year! The blood is said to liquefy after many prayers (e.g., following Mass). This miracle is a symbol of the hope that we find in the protection of the Precious Body and Blood of Christ our Savior.

St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Priest, Stigmatist, Mystic, Italy (1887-1968)—Feast, Sept. 23“A thousand years of enjoying human glory is not worth even an hour spent in sweetly communing with Jesus in theBlessedSacrament.” St. Pio, Patron of Eucharistic Adorers, pray for us to be holy adorers!
